Over 3,000 Chinese Nationals Evacuated From Ukraine

A volunteer carries a child into a train as it prepares to depart from a station in Lviv, western Ukraine, enroute to Poland, on March 3, 2022.

What’s new: More than 3,000 Chinese citizens have left Ukraine safely and entered neighboring countries eight days after the war with Russia broke out, China’s Foreign Ministry said Thursday.

The ministry is working with China’s embassy in Ukraine to evacuate Chinese nationals, said Foreign Ministry spokesperson Wang Wenbin during a regular press conference. China appreciates the assistance of Ukraine and neighboring countries in the evacuation, Wang said.

The background: More than 6,000 Chinese nationals registered for evacuation after Russia invaded Ukraine, according to the embassy. The first batch of students were evacuated by bus Tuesday.

Neighboring Moldova, Romania, Slovakia, Hungary and Poland have granted temporary visa-free access for people arriving from Ukraine.

One Chinese citizen was shot while leaving Ukraine March 1, the Foreign Ministry confirmed. The injured person is “out of danger for the time being,” the ministry said.,
