Outrage over Liz Truss' entitlement to £115,000 a year ex-PM allowance despite only 44 days in office

Even though she was only Prime Minister for 44 days, Liz Truss is able to receive a whopping £115,000 a year for the rest of her life in ex-PM allowance. The high amount has sparked fury among the public, with MPs calling for her to turn down the allowance.

Despite becoming the shortest-service UK Prime Minister in British history, Liz Truss is still eligible to receive the Public Duty Cost Allowance (PDCA). This was set up in 1991 after Margaret Thatcher left office, to “assist former Prime Ministers still active in public life”.

Currently, the allowance is set at £115,000 per year. It is intended to be used to cover expenses for any office or secretarial costs which are required for a former prime minister’s “special position in public life”.
