Our Liverpool: Merseyside's cold snap has at least brought one positive to region

Hello and welcome to this afternoon's instalment of "Our Liverpool".

Tuesday's digest is brought to you from a frosty ECHO towers after Merseyside was hit with a cold snap. Temperatures plummeted last night across the region as many areas were left blanketed in snow.

The freezing conditions continued throughout the night, which made getting out of the bedcovers to tackle the day especially difficult this morning. However, conditions thankfully warmed throughout the day and a hot cup of coffee teamed with multiple layers of clothes finally kept the shivering at bay to be able to bring you with today's talking points.

Travel Chaos

Sadly it's a speedy return to the weather for our first talking point as the icy conditions caused chaos for travellers this morning. The ECHO's Breaking News Editor, Ellen Kirwin, followed all the updates as the wintry conditions caused disruption across the region.

A number of Merseyrail services were cancelled and roads were impacted by the icy conditions, which affected journey times. You can read all the updates here.

When will the cold weather end?

The freezing conditions were predicted as the Met Office has issued a yellow warning for Merseyside. However, the light at the end of the tunnel is almost upon us as the alert remains in place until 12pm tomorrow. You can read the full information from the Met Office on things to be aware of from a yellow weather alert here.

The freezing weather hasn't been all bad

One positive from the cold weather is that Merseyside looks beautiful when it is blanketed in snow. ECHO photographer, Colin Lane, was at Crosby Beach this morning and captured the most wonderful photo as the Liverpool sky was a jaw-dropping haze of pink and blue.

And finally... some good news for commuters

It's been a difficult start to the year for anyone reliant on public transport. The train services were cancelled across the first week of the year as RMT workers continue their ongoing fight against employers for better pay and working conditions.

The cold weather has also brought increased difficulties today as a number of Merseyrail services were cancelled due to the icy conditions. However, ECHO's Political Editor, Liam Thorp, has been on hand to deliver some positive news as Merseyrail confirmed the swanky new fleet of Class 777 trains will be rolled out in a matter of days.
