The Best Picture category at the Academy Awards is always contentious, and this year is no exception. For the second consecutive year, the category has been limited to 10 films which represent the most remarkable achievements in cinema from the past year.
Among the nominees are multi-billion-dollar blockbusters and idiosyncratic indies from Hollywood icons and relative newcomers. Everything Everywhere All at Once leads the pack for the 95th Academy Awards with 11 nominations, while dark comedy The Banshees of Inisherin is close behind with nine.

All Quiet on the Western Front
This German war film based on the best-selling book of the same name has given Netflix its eighth Best Picture nomination. As a Netflix original, it is only available to stream with a subscription to the streaming platform.
Avatar: The Way of Water
James Cameron’s long-awaited epic was a latecomer to the Oscars discourse, having only been released in cinemas in December. The sci-fi blockbuster is still filling theatres worldwide, and recently crossed the $2bn mark in global box office.
As it is a new release, Avatar: The Way of Water is still being shown exclusively in cinemas.

The Banshees of Inisherin
Martin McDonagh’s tragicomedy starring Colin Farrell and Brendan Gleeson is available to stream with a subscription to Disney+, which starts from £7.99 per month. The film is also available to buy on Amazon’s Prime Video, Apple TV, Google Play, YouTube and Sky Store from £9.99.
Elvis
Baz Luhrmann’s biopic exploring the life of the King of Rock and Roll earned leading man Austin Butler a Golden Globe for his performance, as well as an Oscar nomination. It is available to rent from Amazon’s Prime Video, Apple TV, Google Play, Rakuten, Sky Store and YouTube from £4.99, and can be bought on the same platforms from £13.99.
Everything Everywhere All at Once
This surreal sci-fi comedy from filmmaking duo the Daniels has dominated the Oscar nominations, with nods for all four of its lead actors, as well as best director and screenplay. It is available to stream with a subscription to Amazon’s Prime Video. It is also available to rent from Apple TV, Google Play, Rakuten and YouTube from £3.49, and can be bought on the same platforms from £9.99.
The Fabelmans
This semi-autobiographical coming-of-age drama is based on the adolescent years of Hollywood legend Steven Spielberg, and shows how the titan of the film business became the man we know today. The film was released in November in the United States, and is finally set to release exclusively in cinemas across the UK on Friday, January 27.
Tár
Cate Blanchett has been lauded for her performance as conductor and composer Lydia Tár, which has earned the Australian actress her eighth Oscar nomination and potentially her third win. Tár is still a new release here in the UK, and is available to watch exclusively in cinemas.
Top Gun: Maverick
Screen icon Tom Cruise delighted fans when he returned to the cockpit after 25 years for the Top Gun sequel. It is available to stream with a subscription to Paramount Plus, which can be added on to an Amazon Prime Video or Apple TV subscription for £6.99 a month after a seven-day free trial.

Triangle Of Sadness
Swedish filmmaker Ruben Östlund’s English-language feature debut won the Palme d’Or at last year’s Cannes Film Festival, and has bagged three nominations for the Academy Awards. It is available to rent from Prime Video, Apple TV, Google Play, Rakuten, Sky Store, and YouTube from £3.49, and can be bought on the same platforms from £9.99.
Women Talking
This acclaimed drama is full of awards pedigree and is not one to be missed. It stars Oscar nominee Jessie Buckley, BAFTA nominee Claire Foy, two-time Oscar nominee Rooney Mara and three-time Oscar winner Frances McDormand – who also serves as producer.
The film is yet to be released in the UK, but will be shown exclusively in cinemas from Friday, February 10.
