Aryna Sabalenka shines under French Open spotlight to beat Naomi Osaka

21:38 , Eleanor Crooks

The Parisian night belonged to Aryna Sabalenka as the world number one seized a rare chance for the women’s game to shine under the lights at Roland Garros.

For the first time in three years and only the fifth time since the one-match night session was introduced in 2021, a women’s match was given centre stage, ending a sequence of 33 consecutive men’s contests.

Sabalenka’s fourth-round clash with four-time grand slam champion Naomi Osaka was one of the biggest matches of the tournament so far, but the Japanese star was outplayed in a 7-5 6-3 defeat lasting an hour and 27 minutes.

The victory means Sabalenka has reached at least the quarter-finals in her last 14 major tournaments and she has a first French Open title firmly in her sights.

French Open women's quarter-final line-up complete

21:20 , Jamie Braidwood

Aryna Sabalenka will now play No 25 seed Diana Shnaider in the quarter-finals, with the line-up for the last eight now complete. There are in-form players in the bottom half of the draw, including Elina Svitolina and Marta Kostyuk, who play each other next, but Sabalenka has got to be the big favourite now? She’s the only grand slam winner left.

Aryna Sabalenka: 'I feel like I'm getting better and better with every match'

21:16 , Jamie Braidwood

“She’s such a great player, all these tough battles against her, super aggressive tennis. I'm mostly happy the way I served and that I was able to put all of that pressure back on her. Happy with the win, it was a very tough one,. Wow. It’s amazing to play the night session in front of you all.

“I didn't expect that I'll be serving that great. It's probably not the best service game that I ever played in my life, but in this tournament for sure. I feel like I'm getting better and better with every match I'm playing and I'm super pleased with the overall with the performance today.”

Aryna Sabalenka leads a TikTok dance on Philippe-Chatrier

21:11 , Jamie Braidwood

Sabalenka is dancing through to her fourth consecutive French Open quarter-final, literally, as she moonwalks at the end of her post-match interview.

Bit of a weird end to a good match.

Aryna Sabalenka defeats Naomi Osaka 7-5 6-3 to reach French Open quarter-finals

21:05 , Jamie Braidwood

What a performance that was from Aryna Sabalenka. I’m not sure Naomi Osaka can have any complaints. There’s a smile on Osaka’s face as she hugs Sabalenka at the net, and then the World No 1 beams as she waves to the crowd.

She’s not won this tournament before. If she plays like this, she’s got to? Osaka waves farewell to the crowd after her best performance at this tournament, reaching the fourth round for the first time. Her ranking is going to improve before Wimbledon.

GAME, SET AND MATCH! Naomi Osaka 5-7 3-6 Aryna Sabalenka

21:01 , Jamie Braidwood

Here comes Sabalenka, sensing the chance to finish this off. Osaka can’t believe how Sabalenka keeps finding the back of the court and she skips a forehand winner to get to 15-30 against the Osaka serve.

Double fault from Osaka! This will be match point. WOOOW! What a forehand return from Sabalenka! She blasts the return off the wide serve crosscourt and Osaka can barely get her racket to it in time.

What a performance that was from Aryna Sabalenka. She’s back into the quarter-finals.

*Naomi Osaka 5-7 3-5 Aryna Sabalenka

20:58 , Jamie Braidwood

Sabalenka is on the brink of the quarter-finals. That was another supreme game from the world No 1, dictating behind her first serve. The crowd, wanting more, attempts to rally behind Osaka, who is throwing everything she has at this. Sabalenka responds with a second-serve ace! Finding precision to hit the outside of the line!

BREAK! Naomi Osaka 5-7 3-4 Aryna Sabalenka*

20:54 , Jamie Braidwood

The consistency and depth of Sabalenka’s return! From 15-15, she pins Osaka deep onto the baseline, firing a winner then drawing an error.

Two break points.... Point of the match! Sublime from Sabalenka, dialing up the pressure. Osaka swung back with a Hail Mary of a forehand but Sabalenka produced the drop-volley to break.

Big moment.

Sabalenka holds! *Naomi Osaka 5-7 3-3 Aryna Sabalenka

20:51 , Jamie Braidwood

After that ace, Sabalenka can’t find her first serve and this is now being dictated by the Osaka return. She is going big against second serves. The first forehand sails a touch long, but the backhand down the line drops in. Another look... Osaka goes long on the forehand.

She had looks. Sabalenka closes the door. She combines a deep forehand with a lovely touch. That variety is really getting her out of trouble.

Naomi Osaka 5-7 3-2 Aryna Sabalenka*

20:47 , Jamie Braidwood

Osaka gets her teeth into the return game and is able to claw her way to 30-30, with Sabalenka netting off the deep return.

What a response! An ace down the middle on a pressure point, her 11th of the match. But it’s followed by a double fault.

Osaka holds! Naomi Osaka 5-7 3-2 Aryna Sabalenka*

20:44 , Jamie Braidwood

Sabalenka finds the deep return and Osaka hits out to bring up break point. Osaka can’t find the first serve, but Sabalenka can’t get the return back from the Osaka wide serve.

Good hold from Osaka! She finds the first serve to get to game point, then is able to step in and rip the forehand winner. A steely glare from the former No 1.

*Naomi Osaka 5-7 2-2 Aryna Sabalenka

20:41 , Jamie Braidwood

This feels like a must-hold game for Osaka, especially as Sabalenka drills the winner to get to deuce. Osaka is able to find the serve-winner combo past Sabalenka, but the world No 1 leaps to whack another return winner.

A better forehand-forehand exchange for Osaka, Sabalenka nets. But Osaka can’t get the hold as she pushes the overhead out! Still deuce.

*Naomi Osaka 5-7 2-2 Aryna Sabalenka

20:35 , Jamie Braidwood

There’s a little glimmer for Osaka on 0-15 but Sabalenka produces another lovely touch to get Osaka chasing after the ball.

It’s followed by a roaring ace down the middle, then out wide. Osaka is being subdued by this serving game and hits out on the return.

Naomi Osaka 5-7 2-1 Aryna Sabalenka*

20:31 , Jamie Braidwood

This is becoming emphatic from Sabalenka. She jumps on a second-serve from Osaka and powers the backhand, before tucking away the drop shot.

It was 0-30, but Osaka recovers and moves her feet well to put away a forehand winner from down low. Osaka pushes Sabalenka wide and draws the error.

A crucial hold at this stage.

*Naomi Osaka 5-7 1-1 Aryna Sabalenka

Wonderful anticipation from Sabalenka to flick a volley past Osaka from the net. Sabalenka then produces her hardest hitting of the match, from both wings, to power the forehand winner.

Naomi Osaka 5-7 1-0 Aryna Sabalenka*

20:24 , Jamie Braidwood

Osaka rediscovers a decent level of serving to start the second set. Her level just dipped towards the end of the 50-minute opening set.

FIRST SET! Naomi Osaka 5-7 Aryna Sabalenka

20:19 , Jamie Braidwood

Osaka nets on the return before Sabalenka finds a powerful body serve to get to three set points on 40-0. ACE from Sabalenka - that almost sums up the set, as the serve has got her through while jumping on a slight dip from Osaka in the 11th game.

77% first serve percentage for Sabalenka, winning 83% of those points.

Sabalenka also extends a ridiculous record where she’s not lost a grand slam match in straight sets since the US Open in 2020.

BREAK! Naomi Osaka 5-6 Aryna Sabalenka*

20:17 , Jamie Braidwood

Sabalenka is timing her move! She jumps on a second-serve from Osaka and takes over the point, firing the ball at her feet to draw the error. A Sabalenka winner from mid-court brings two break points. Osaka can’t find the first serve and Sabalenka’s return is similarly thumped deep to the back of the court, with Osaka netting.

Sabalenka breaks and will serve for the set. Would be a surprise to see her not convert this now.

*Naomi Osaka 5-5 Aryna Sabalenka

20:13 , Jamie Braidwood

Osaka won a first-set tiebreak in her last match against Sabalenka, which was a three-set defeat in Madrid.

Osaka has won a tiebreak in each of her three wins to reach the fourth round of the French Open.

Are we heading for another?

Naomi Osaka 5-4 Aryna Sabalenka*

Clever play from Osaka to redirect the forehand crosscourt and wrong-foot Sabalenka, followed by this time finishing off the backhand winner down the line to hold.

Osaka is very competitive here.

*Naomi Osaka 4-4 Aryna Sabalenka

20:08 , Jamie Braidwood

Sabalenka flashes a backhand winner past Osaka but she responds with two massive serves down the middle immediately followed by the first-time strike for a winner. Osaka had the look to finish the game with a backhand winner but pushes long, then nets again on the backhand, bringing up deuce.

Osaka is winning the shorter points but Sabalenka is having more success when she can get into the rally and push Osaka back with depth. Still on deuce after a double-fault from Osaka.

*Naomi Osaka 4-4 Aryna Sabalenka

20:03 , Jamie Braidwood

Osaka clips the line with a return on the opening point but Sabalenka responds well, winning another point by closing her racket dropping the ball short and then blasting a backhand winner through.

Naomi Osaka 4-3 Aryna Sabalenka*

19:58 , Jamie Braidwood

It looks as if we’re heading for another serve-heavy game, with Osaka jumping to 40-0.

Sabalenka, though, wins two points in a row by switching up the pattern of the rally, dropping the ball short with slice. Sabalenka then thumps a backhand crosscourt to get to deuce.

Osaka responds with a big serve out wide, unreturned, then puts away the backhand winner.

*Naomi Osaka 3-3 Aryna Sabalenka

19:54 , Jamie Braidwood

The level of serving is hitting a high level. Sabalenka fires her fifth ace of the match to hold to love, also, with 40 per cent of serves so far unreturned.

Osaka replies by holding to love, so we skip through a second game in a row without a rally.

*Naomi Osaka 2-2 Aryna Sabalenka

Sabalenka has found her timing and is looking much happier. She directs the wide serve for an ace to hold.

Naomi Osaka 2-1 Aryna Sabalenka*

19:46 , Jamie Braidwood

Sabalenka had a wide-open look at the forehand winner with Osaka out of the court but pushes long and shakes her head. However, she steadies with a nice drop shot, compounded by Osaka firing out on the backhand line.

Two break points: Sabalenka takes charge with power on the backhand, pushing Osaka back, before firing the winner. So, despite a less than satisfactory start, the world No 1 gets the break back straight away.

BREAK! *Naomi Osaka 2-0 Aryna Sabalenka

19:40 , Jamie Braidwood

Osaka blasts a backhand crosscourt when given a look at a second-serve from Sabalenka. She gets up to the short ball and produces a sharp angled backhand winner to get to break point on the first Sabalenka service game.

Double fault from Sabalenka! There’s a grimace from the world No 1.

French Open: Naomi Osaka 1-0 Aryna Sabalenka*

19:37 , Jamie Braidwood

Expect plenty of big hitting between these players. Osaka finds good serving to get to 40-15, and thinks she has won the game with an ace, only for it to be called out. A deep return from Sabalenka on a second serve allows her to stay in the game. Osaka then makes a double-fault.

Sabalenka clips the net-cord and her forehand bounces out. Then Osaka blasts the forehand winner to hold.

French Open: Naomi Osaka v Aryna Sabalenka

19:17 , Jamie Braidwood

Here we go! Naomi Osaka is wearing the glittering gold jacket and dress she wore to walk onto court for her second-round match against Donna Vekic, but without a specially designed skirt. That’s for now, at least, Osaka is just getting her ready in the tunnel before walkout out onto Chatrier.

When was the last time women played at night at the French Open?

19:14 , Jamie Braidwood

Aryna Sabalenka played in the last women’s match to be scheduled in the night session at the French Open. That was on day eight of the tournament in 2023, and was a fourth-round win against former US Open champion Sloane Stephens.

Since then, the French Open have argued that men’s matches have almost exclusively been scheduled in the standalone primetime slot because they tend to be longer and guarantee at least three sets.

They seem to have changed their mind for Osaka v Sabalenka, which was clearly the standout match of the day.

GAME, SET AND MATCH! Matteo Berrettini back into a grand slam QF

18:53 , Jamie Braidwood

Special scenes as Matteo Berrettini celebrates returning to a grand slam quarter-final for the first time in almost four years! The former Wimbledon finalist is playing at Roland Garros for the first time since 2021 after several long years of injury hell, returning now as the world No 105. But after ending the run of giant-slayer Jaun Manuel Cerundolo in straight-sets, Berrettini advances to become the lowest-ranked French Open quarter-finalist since 2007! He will either play Frances Tiafoe or Matteo Arnaldi in the last-eight.

On playing Sabalenka twice already this season: “I feel like I played a pretty good match in Madrid. I think I just dipped in the second and third set. So hopefully just keep the consistency and keep trying to be aggressive and whatever happens, happens.”

Naomi Osaka v Aryna Sabalenka head-to-head

18:25 , Jamie Braidwood

This will be Osaka and Sabalenka’s fourth career meeting, but their third this season. Sabalenka has won both so far this year, winning 6-2 6-4 in the last-16 of Indian Wells, before winning 6-7 6-3 6-2, on clay, in the last-16 of the Madrid Open. Osaka’s only win against Sabalenka was almost eight years ago at the 2018 US Open.

GAME, SET AND MATCH! Felix Auger-Aliassime cruises through

18:23 , Jamie Braidwood

That’s a nice straight-sets win for Felix Auger-Aliassime to reach the quarter-finals. The men’s fourth seed defeats Alejandro Tabilo 6-3 7-5 6-1 in just over two hours on Court Philippe-Chatrier to reach the quarter-finals of the French Open for the first time. He is the highest seed left in the top half of the draw and will face Italy’s 10th seed Flavio Cobolli on Wednesday in the last-eight. Cobolli defeated Zachary Svajda in four sets earlier.

A quick win for Auger-Aliassime means Naomi Osaka v Aryna Sabalenka will start as scheduled, with walk-ons from 7:15pm BST.

Winner to play No 25 seed Diana Shnaider in quarter-finals

18:10 , Jamie Braidwood

This year’s French Open is guaranteed to crown a new women’s champion. Aryna Sabalenka and Naomi Osaka are also the only former grand slam winners still in the draw.

The winner of their fourth-round match will play the No 25 seed Diana Shnaider in the quarter-finals. She knocked out former Australian Open champion Madison Keys 6-3 3-6 6-0 earlier today. And, in the same half of the draw, Poland’s Maja Chwalinska beat France’s Diane Parry to set up a clash with 22nd seed Anna Kalinskaya. The odds are looking good for Sabalenka to get through this section, although she will need to get through Osaka first.

Women’s match to headline night session at French Open for first time in three years

17:55 , Eleanor Crooks

The French Open will stage a women’s match in its night session on Monday for the first time in three years.

Tournament director Amelie Mauresmo has been heavily criticised for reserving the prime-time one-match slot almost exclusively for men’s singles contests.

Since the session was introduced in 2021, only four of the first 60 matches have been women’s singles and none since 2023.

But, with the top half of the men’s draw featuring few household names, the blockbuster women’s fourth-round encounter between world No 1 Aryna Sabalenka and Naomi Osaka has made the cut on Monday, ending a run of 33 straight men’s matches.

Today's big news: Serena Williams confirms stunning return to tennis

Serena Williams has confirmed that she will make a stunning return to tennis at the age of 44, almost four years after her last competitive appearance.

The 23-time grand slam champion has received a doubles wildcard to play at the HSBC Championships at the Queen’s Club in west London, which starts on Monday 8 June, ahead of a likely return at Wimbledon later in the month. She is set to play doubles at Queen’s with Canadian teenager Victoria Mboko, who idolised Williams growing up, and may play singles at Wimbledon.

Aryna Sabalenka bidding to match Serena Williams record

17:25 , Jamie Braidwood

Aryna Sabalenka lost in last year’s French Open final to Coco Gauff and is also looking to win her first grand slam tournament on a natural surface after titles at the Australian Open and US Open. The world No 1’s consistency at the majors has been very impressive in recent years, and she is bidding for her 14th consecutive grand slam quarter-final, which would be the longest streak since Serena Williams from 2000 to 2005.

Her only loss this season against top-20 players came in the Australian Open final to Elena Rybakina.

Naomi Osaka enjoyed career-best run at Roland Garros

17:10 , Jamie Braidwood

Naomi Osaka is through to the fourth round of a grand slam tournament for the eighth time in her career. However, this is the first time she has reached the last-16 of a tournament that’s not on a hard-court, having previously won two Australian Opens and two US Opens.

Osaka, the 16th seed, has beaten Laura Siegemund, Donna Vekic and 17th seed Iva Jovic so far in Paris. Her victory over Jovic came in just under three hours and was a proper battle. She has hit the most aces out of any player in the women’s draw so far this tournament.
