Orioles Place Kjerstad On Concussion IL After Hit

Baltimore Orioles' Heston Kjerstad reacts after being hit by a pitch from New York Yankees relief pitcher Clay Holmes during the ninth inning of a baseball game, Friday, July 12, 2024, in Baltimore. (

The Baltimore Orioles made a roster move on Saturday, placing outfielder Heston Kjerstad on the seven-day concussion injured list following a scary incident where he was hit in the helmet by a pitch. Originally slated to start against the New York Yankees, Kjerstad was removed from the lineup just before the game, with the team later announcing his placement on the IL. In a corresponding move, the Orioles called up outfielder Kyle Stowers from Triple-A Norfolk.

With the All-Star break looming, the Orioles also made additional roster adjustments. Starting pitcher Cade Povich was optioned to Norfolk, while right-hander Vinny Nottoli had his contract selected from the same affiliate.

On the Yankees' side, catcher Jose Trevino was placed on the 10-day IL due to a left quad strain. To fill his spot, the team recalled catcher Carlos Narváez from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.

The incident involving Kjerstad occurred in the bottom of the ninth inning of Friday night's game when he was struck by a 97 mph pitch from New York's Clay Holmes. The situation escalated, leading to both benches clearing before the Yankees secured a 4-1 victory.

Following the game, Yankees manager Aaron Boone revealed that he had a conversation with Orioles manager Brandon Hyde, describing it as a 'fine' exchange.
