The Met Commissioner, Sir Mark Rowley, doesn’t often get the chance to brag about London’s successes, but he is justifiably upbeat that there were fewer than 100 homicides – 97, in fact – last year. By contrast, there were 109 in 2024. As he also observes, every homicide shatters a family, and last year’s victims included eight teenagers, but the downward trajectory is unequivocally good news.
In the world’s least sought-after league table of global city homicide rates, London now ranks behind Berlin as well as New York. So sucks to Elon Musk and those who suggest you take your life in your hands when you visit London. Sucks too to US president, Donald Trump, who has said that “crime in London is through the roof”.
