OpenAI Chief Technology Officer Mira Murati has announced her departure from the company after six-and-a-half years of service. In a note to the OpenAI team, Murati expressed gratitude for her time with the organization, describing it as an extraordinary privilege. She mentioned that while there is never an ideal time to leave a place one cherishes, the moment feels right for her.

Murati's journey with OpenAI began in 2018 when she joined the leadership team. Prior to her role at OpenAI, she had experience working at augmented reality company Ultraleap (formerly Leap Motion) and Tesla. One of her notable contributions was the development of ChatGPT, an artificial intelligence tool, and the image generator Dall-E. These innovations played a significant role in propelling OpenAI to prominence in Silicon Valley and sparking an AI arms race in the tech industry.

Notably, Murati briefly assumed the position of interim CEO of OpenAI in the midst of a leadership crisis in November of the previous year. The turmoil resulted in the ousting of Sam Altman, followed by his swift reinstatement. Murati stood alongside over 500 OpenAI employees in a collective threat to resign if Altman was not reinstated, showcasing her commitment to the company and its leadership.
