There is just one week left for people in eastern Kentucky to register with the Small Business Administration for disaster recovery loans.
The deadline to apply for Physical Damage and Home Disaster loans is next Friday, October 28th.
Jim Accurso is Public Affairs Specialist with the SBA’s Office of Disaster Assistance. He said the agency understands why it can take people time to sign up for assistance after a disaster.
“The initial shock and you know, it takes a couple or three weeks before people can get their feet under them again, right? To understand what they need to do,” said Accurso.
The two remaining Business Recovery Centers in Knott and Letcher County will permanently close Tuesday, October 25th. When those centers close, help and registration will be available at 800-621-3362 and online at disasterassistance.gov.
Accurso saids people in qualifying counties who haven’t yet should register with the SBA.
“Even though they may not take out that loan. So again, they’re under no obligation to take a loan that they would get. However, they need to apply for the loan relief from the SBA before they can go back to FEMA,” said Accurso.
Accurso said this will allow FEMA to assess them for more potential assistance.
The SBA spokesman said the agency is here to help people who suffered losses in last summer’s flooding. He encouraged people to continue reaching out for assistance even after the deadline passes.
The deadline to sign up for disaster assistance loans for non-residential properties is May 1st of next year.
The SBA has approved more than 710 home and business loans for more than 53 million dollars in eastern Kentucky.
