In the Lancashire countryside, less than an hour from Manchester, is where you’ll find one of the UK’s best boutique hotels. Moor Hall, in Aughton, near Ormskirk, is a Grade II* listed manor house with seven luxurious guest rooms - and a two Michelin star restaurant.
The hotel has been named in the Top 50 Boutique Hotels List - a brand of hospitality trade journal The Morning Advertiser. It ranked 20th among some of the best boutique hotels in the country, as voted for by leading industry experts, hoteliers, travel writers and influencers.
According to the list, Moor Hall is “something to be experienced once in your lifetime”. Of course, the main star of the show is Mark Birchall’s award-winning restaurant, which holds two Michelin Stars, a Michelin Green Star and 5 AA Rosettes.

Having previously been executive chef at L’Enclume, Mark's menu at Moor Hall features exquisite dishes crafted from produce grown on the hotel’s five acre site, or sourced locally, which is “cooked and served to perfection”. The restaurant has an extensive selection of wines to pair with the food, and a cheese room, creating the ultimate dining experience.
Afterwards guests can retire to one of the seven “ultra luxurious” bedrooms, each one with gorgeous views of the lake or gardens. Five of the rooms are located in the manor house itself, while two more can be found in the gatehouse within the grounds.
Keeping the number of suites to a minimum ensures that residents can benefit from spacious rooms with lots of luxurious touches. The entry for Moor Hall reads that the interior design “keeps residents in a constant state of relaxation” and that the rooms “are well worth a few, or more, nights of anyone’s time”.
For maximum indulgence, there’s the spacious Mulberry Suite, which has breathtaking views from both the bedroom and the bathroom. Guests are guaranteed a good night’s sleep thanks to the huge emperor bed, while a seating area provides the perfect place to unwind after sampling Michelin-starred food.
The en-suite-bathroom features his and her sinks, along with a roll top freestanding bath which stands in front of a marble fireplace. There are sash windows to the front, side and rear, allowing guests to be fully immersed in the hotel’s tranquil surroundings.
There are four more rooms within the main house, including The Damson Suite, which features a fully-vaulted ceiling with exposed oak beams and a chandelier. In the gatehouse are the Medlar Suite and the Elderberry Suite, which have a more contemporary feel.
