Omagh supermarket workers praised after helping woman 'stranded' with weekly shop

Two supermarket workers in Co Tyrone have been praised after they came to the rescue of a regular customer who was left stranded with her weekly shop.

Asda Omagh staff members Robert Collins and Shane McSwiggan saved the day when the shopper's car broke down.

The customer was collecting her shopping and when she got back into her car when it wouldn’t start. Robert and Shane, have worked in the supermarket for the last nine years, went to the local garage to get the customer a car battery charger, brought it back to her and made sure there was enough charge for the customer to drive the car from the store to the nearby garage.

Their kindness did not stop there as they travelled to the garage in their own car and stayed with her until a new car battery was fitted.

Shane said the act of kindness was 'no big deal' and would expect anyone to else in the situation to do likewise.

“I would expect anyone to do the same in that situation, imagine it was your family member," Shane said.

"It was no big deal, and I would not see anyone stuck we just wanted to make sure that the customer got back safely on the road and on her way to work.

Robert added: “I was more than happy to help the customer in this situation, if it was a friend or family member in the same situation, I wouldn’t expect anything less. I am very glad that she got sorted and was able to get on with her day.”

The customer returned to the store later that day with a thank you card and said: “I really appreciated the kindness shown from Robert and Shane. They really went out of their way to help me even by bringing my car down to the garage, I wouldn’t have expected that, yet they were more than happy to. Thank you, Robert and Shane, for saving my day!”

Conor Quinn, Home Shopping Section Leader at Asda said: “Robert and Shane are two brilliant colleagues, and I was not surprised to hear they had helped the customer in her hour of need.

“I have been lucky to have been their section leader for just over a year and every week I hear something they have done for a customer, big or small."
