Carlos Alcaraz and Novak Djokovic are both a win away from setting up a blockbuster clash for gold in the Olympics men’s singles final as the first tennis medal is awarded on Friday.
Alcaraz takes on Felix Auger-Aliassime while Djokovic meets Lorenzo Musetti at Roland Garros as they look to set up a rematch of last month’s Wimbledon final in Paris.
Djokovic continues his bid to win a first Olympics gold medal at the age of 37, in what is the only major title the 24-time grand slam champion is yet to win.
There was a big shock in the women’s singles as Iga Swiatek saw her winning run at Roland Garros come to an end in the semi-finals, but the World No 1 can win bronze today.
The first gold will go to either China’s Wang Xinyu and Zhang Zhizhen or Tomas Machac and Kateřina Siniakova of the Czech Republic following the mixed doubles final on Court Philippe-Chatrier.
The tennis competition started Saturday 27 July and runs for just over a week to Sunday 4 August, and there will be gold medals for men’s and women’s singles, men’s and women’s doubles and mixed doubles events.
