The brave police officer who single-handedly ended the murderous stabbing spree of a man at a Sydney shopping centre is being hailed a hero.

Joel Cauchi entered the busy Bondi Junction Westfield shopping centre just after 3pm on Saturday armed with a large knife and began his rampage.
