Offensive coordinator Liam Coen on Baker Mayfield’s improvement

With just three games remaining on their 2022 schedule, the Los Angeles Rams are relying on quarterback Baker Mayfield to deliver them another win before the season draws to a close. Offensive coordinator Liam Coen spoke to the media on Thursday about Mayfield’s preparation for the Rams’ Christmas day matchup against the Denver Broncos and hinted that the former first-overall pick is making progress in his system.

Asked what Mayfield has accomplished this week, the coordinator told the media that his starting quarterback has made huge strides in picking up on the little things that define great quarterback play.

“He’s been here for what, not even two and a half weeks or whatever it’s been? So, the guy just went on to another jog through and was able to call a lot of plays that he’s never called before,” Coen explained. “Every single day is truly a learning process from an information standpoint to be able to regurgitate that information to then be able to go and execute the information, so I think he’s done a really nice job. Some things in the game the other night, we could’ve liked to have back, but we’ve also got to make some plays around him and be able to execute with all 11, so I think he’s done a really nice job so far.”

Mayfield’s accomplishments in the NFL aren’t quite on par with Matthew Stafford’s at this point in their respective careers, but for the minimal investment that Los Angeles had to make to secure his services through the end of the season, he has played remarkably well. His role as the Rams’ starting quarterback has always been seen as a temporary solution to Stafford’s injury setbacks, but if Coen is to be believed, Mayfield may have shown enough to find a job as a starting quarterback somewhere next season.
