Off-duty police officer with cancer pulls man from burning car after crash

An off-duty police officer with cancer rescued a man from inside a burning, overturned vehicle following a crash in New York.

NYPD police officer Joseph Wetzel, who has been diagnosed with stage three colorectal cancer, was in Hauppauge getting breakfast with his father when he heard the crash from across the street on 4 February.

Footage released by the force on Monday (2 March) shows Mr Wetzel speaking to on-duty officers moments after he pulled one of the trapped victims out of the burning overturned vehicle.

He told them there was another woman stuck inside the car. Both crash victims survived.

“I believe that if I’m in a position to help people, I will do so, even if I’m sick like I am,” he told CNBC.
