An off-duty officer with the Atlanta Police Department was tragically shot and killed by one of his neighbors in Douglas County, Georgia. The incident occurred early Friday morning near St. Andrews Golf Club.
The officer, identified as Aubree Horton, had been a member of the Atlanta Police Department since 2015 and was serving in the Fugitive Unit at the time of the incident. Horton had recently been honored with an Investigator of the Year award, showcasing his dedication and commitment to his work.
According to reports, Horton was allegedly experiencing a mental health episode or was under the influence of narcotics when he broke into a neighbor's home. Surveillance footage captured the events leading up to the tragic encounter.
Upon gaining entry into the residence, the homeowner, in an act of self-defense, used a firearm to protect themselves, resulting in the fatal shooting of Horton. The Douglas County Sheriff's Office is currently conducting an investigation into the incident to gather more details and understand the sequence of events.
Horton resided just a few streets away from the house he entered, leaving neighbors in shock and disbelief. One neighbor expressed their surprise, stating, 'It’s right here in your neighborhood and a golfing community, a place where you really think this would never happen.'
As of now, investigators have not determined the motive behind Horton's actions and are working diligently to uncover the reasons that led to the tragic outcome.
