Oakland Democratic Mayor Sheng Thao is facing a recall on November's ballot after community organizers successfully gathered nearly double the required number of signatures to initiate the process. The group known as 'OUST' (Oakland United to Recall Sheng Thao) submitted their petition two weeks ago, and Alameda County officials confirmed on Wednesday that they had surpassed the 25,000 voter signature threshold.
The recall effort was led by retired Judge Brenda Harbin-Forte, who accused Thao of contributing to rising crime rates, including incidents of grand theft auto and street robberies. Harbin-Forte claimed that businesses were leaving Oakland at an accelerated rate since Thao took office.
One of the key grievances cited by recall supporters was the perceived 'dismantling' of the Oakland Police Department under Thao's leadership. Harbin-Forte emphasized the historic significance of the recall, stating that it provides voters with a sense of urgency to remove what she described as a 'dishonest and incompetent mayor.'
While Thao's office did not respond to requests for comment, Councilmember Noel Gallo expressed concerns that the recall could further divide the city government. However, he acknowledged the importance of allowing voters to voice their concerns through the democratic process.
The recall petition garnered a total of 40,595 valid signatures, with signatories expressing frustration over issues such as homelessness, vehicle break-ins, and a perceived decline in the city's overall condition. Organizers also criticized Thao for missing a grant deadline to combat retail theft, her decision to dismiss former Oakland Police Chief LeRonne Armstrong, and her controversial remarks regarding the Oakland Athletics' relocation to Las Vegas.
