Nurse who began career in Glasgow returning to take up senior post of Nurse Director at NHSGCC

A nurse who began her career in Glasgow is returning to take up the senior post of Nurse Director at NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde (NHSGCC).

Professor Angela Wallace has been appointed following a competitive recruitment process. Professor Wallace will join NHSGGC from NHS Forth Valley where she has been Board Nurse Director since 2002.

Professor Wallace will replace Dr Margaret McGuire, who is retiring after seven years after playing a crucial part in the response to the coronavirus pandemic.

Jane Grant, Chief Executive of NHSGGC said: “I am delighted that Angela has been appointed to the post of Nurse Director and look forward to working closely with her as NHSGGC continues to emerge from the pandemic, remobilise our services and support the health and wellbeing of our staff. Angela brings with her extensive experience leading nursing, midwifery and allied health professions.

“As Nurse Director, Angela will return to the place where she began her nursing career, initially training at the Victoria Infirmary, and progressing to the role of senior charge nurse within intensive care and coronary care.

“I also want to take this opportunity to thank Dr Margaret McGuire, who is set to retire after an outstanding career of public service. Her passion and commitment for patients and colleagues is exemplary as was seen during the pandemic.”

Angela’s achievements have included the delivery of a comprehensive Quality and Safety strategy and the development of the country’s first nursing and midwifery care assurance system to drive performance improvement in nursing care. Professor Wallace also leads the delivery of a range of NHS Scotland initiatives, including most recently as co-chair of the national model of health and care for care homes, transforming nursing care home roles.

In February 2020, the Scottish Government appointed Professor Wallace as the Interim Director for Infection Prevention and Control with NHSGGC. Over the past two years, Professor Wallace has provided leadership, guidance and assurance to the Board on the management and prevention of infection within our services.

Professor Wallace, said: “I am incredibly proud to take on this role at a crucial time for the NHS, as we continue to manage the health emergency and remobilise our services. The last two years have been unprecedented and have taken a toll on our teams, as well as the communities we serve. Throughout, person-centred care has been the priority and that will remain as we recover – but my job will also be to support our colleagues, helping all of our staff to reach their full potential.

“When I began my career at the old Victoria Infirmary, I wouldn’t have dreamed that I would become Nurse Director and it’s a real joy to go back to my roots and work once again for the benefit of all our patients across Greater Glasgow and Clyde.”
