NTAs host Joel Dommett overheard admitting to 'awkward' blunder after Strictly win

Joel Dommett had viewers rewinding their TVs towards the end of Thursday night's National Television Awards, when he was overheard admitting to an 'awkward' moment after Strictly Come Dancing won Best Talent Show.

Following on from the likes of Dermot O'Leary and Sir Trevor McDonald, who have also hosted the annual event, Masked Dancer host Joel was back at the helm for the second year in a row, having picked up the baton for the delayed ceremony last year. Things ran rather smoothly on the night, with NTAs winners including Ant and Dec, who couldn't be there due to Covid, but still picked up Best Presenter, winning for a 21st time, although Stephen Mulhern did rip up their acceptance speech as he collected on their behalf.

Ant and Dec had more reason to celebrate as I'm A Celebrity won Best Entertainment, while this year's National Television Awards were a happy stomping ground for Emmerdale as Mark Charnock won Best Serial Drama Performance, presented by Michael and Gemma Owen, as well as winning the last award of the evening, Best Serial Drama, ahead of the 50th birthday episode on Sunday.

The penultimate accolade to be handed out on Thursday night was for Talent Show and, it came as no surprise that Strictly, the most watched show on TV, won again. Reigning champions Rose Ayling-Ellis and Giovanni Pernice gave the winners' speech as they were joined by many of the cast, including pros like Nikita Kuzmin and Nancy Xu and last year's celeb contestants like Rhys Stephenson and Dan Walker.

It took a while for the Strictly star to arrive on and exit the stage and, as they did, host Joel clambered up the steps and could be heard muttering what sounded like: "This is awkward. Didn't rehearse where I'd come in," before going straight back into presenter mode to shout: "Well done guys, well done. The prop guy got a thank, I like that!"
