Nottinghamshire country pub goes up for sale as owner retires

A village pub has gone up for sale after the publican decided to call last orders and retire from the industry. Valerie Hope and her family have owned The Beck in Caunton, near Newark, since 1998. Last year Mrs Hope sold the historic Wig & Mitre pub in Lincoln, which she founded with her husband Michael in 1977.

The Beck, a freehouse and fine dining restaurant, in the picturesque village just off the A616, was originally a 16th century hostelry. The building, which is full of rustic charm and still retains some of the original features, is on the market for £875,000.

The family worked hard to survive the trials of the Covid pandemic and took the opportunity afforded by the lockdown restrictions to continue investing into the property and give the the trading areas a complete overhaul. The "cherished" pub-restaurant is being marketed by licensed and leisure property specialists Everard Cole.

Everard Cole Director Jon Heald said: “The Beck is a stunning property in a very sought-after village. The property boasts a wealth of character features. It will be a very sad day when Valerie finally does retire from the hospitality industry, but the sale presents a tremendous opportunity for a new owner and provides a great platform to take the business further."

The business in Newark Road, has an open plan bar and restaurant and mainly operates as a gastro pub with around 100 covers and a 60-seater terrace at the rear but it is also popular for drinks. It also boasts two ensuite apartments that have recently been used as letting bedrooms.

In 2005 the pub won an acclaimed Egon Ronay food award and it's still first class according to diners. The Beck, which continues to trade while it is up for sale, has earned five star reviews for the service and food. The menu includes tapas, steaks and main courses such as Lincolnshire sausages, beef wellington and bream with shrimp samphire.

A satisfied diner said: "Turned up on the off chance after seeing the sign for this place on the main road. The staff were very welcoming and was able to give us a table. The menu had a variety of food to choose from and we enjoyed our food very much. Definitely worth coming off the A1 for a break and enjoying some local pub food instead of the motorway services."

Another reviewer said: "Dropped in here whilst out for a bike ride one evening. A lovely country pub with a very welcoming atmosphere and plenty of space both inside and out to relax and enjoy a pint or a bite to eat. Great selection of drinks, awesome menu and fast, friendly service."
