It's only been open six months but a West Bridgford chippy is in the running for a prestigious national award. The Cod's Scallops, located at the £20m Wilford Lane retail park has been shortlisted in the top ten restaurants of the year in the National Fish & Chip Awards.
Since opening in April diners have praised the big portions, relaxed atmosphere and super friendly staff. Meanwhile the business continues to face the uphill battle of rising prices from soaring energy bill to the cost of everything from fish and oil to peas and packaging.
The sixth in the Cod's Scallops' chain, the business is no stranger to the awards. In 2020 the original Wollaton chippy, in Bramcote Lane, was crowned the best in the UK.

After hundreds of applications, the popular restaurant is the only fish and chip shop in Nottinghamshire to be shortlisted for the esteemed award, sponsored this year by Seafood from Iceland. The winner will be announced at The National Fish & Chip Awards, hosted by the The National Federation of Fish Friers (NFFF), on the February 28, 2023, at London's Park Plaza Westminster Bridge.
Andrew Crook, President at the NFFF, comments “The National Fish & Chip Awards are such an important part of celebrating the fish and chip industry, whilst recognising the very best in Britain. We’re delighted with the standard of applications this year and the Top 10 Restaurants of the Year really reflects the quality and hard-working nature of businesses in the UK. We can’t wait to celebrate at the awards ceremony!”
After launching in Wollaton in 2011, owner John Molnar went on to open a second in Carrington in 2016. The business later expanded outside Notts to open in Long Eaton, Derbyshire, Market Harborough, Leicestershire and Harborne, near Birmingham.
As well as being a takeaway, the West Bridgford chippy has a 38-seater licensed restaurant with a vast menu offering up to 20 types of fish and shellfish such as salmon, monkfish, oysters, lobster and mussels. There's award-winning steak and Scale Ale pies plus all the usual chip shop favourites such as sausages, fishcakes, curry sauce and pickled eggs.
An added twist - and a bit of spice - comes from the Momma Bains range of samosas and veggie curries from two Michelin starred chef Sat Bains and his mum.
