Nottingham Forest transfer window rated as strong message sent over Sam Surridge

The transfer window has ended with Nottingham Forest having completed five signings, as well as retained the services of key players.

We discussed those deals - as well as the potential for Forest to make the play-offs - on this week's Garibaldi Red podcast with host Matt Davies, Forest fan Michael Temple and Reds legend Garry Birtles.

Part of the conversation is below, but you can listen to the full episode here, or watch it here.

What did you make of the transfer window overall?

MT : "When we spoke three weeks ago we said success would be dictated by who stayed rather than who came in. Brennan Johnson and Djed Spence were the two biggest concerns for me.

"We all feel blindsided by the injury to Lewis Grabban, but all things considered with the recruitment to a structure, suggests it's been a really good window.

"We've navigated ourselves into a decent position."

GB : "It's a shame that just before it closed we had injuries but we've got players in who play in those positions.

"Lewis Grabban will be a big miss and we wait on news of Steve Cook. Davis scored again though and his confidence will be sky high.

"Steve knows the lad from Stoke (Sam Surridge), as well as Panzo, so that helps for players coming in. It's positive for me.

"I don't look at the ones that have gone because they aren't our player. It's sad they've gone but you concentrate on what you have.

"We actually know about these players. We've asked 'who' about players coming in in the past, but that's not the case now.

"The ones that haven't gone are in some ways more important than the ones that have come in. We've not lost a single key player so that's good."

Marks out of 10 for the window?

MD: "It's an eight of 10 because we were excited about Wallace and Bowler. We couldn't get those deals done but we know Lolley and Mighten are to come back.

"They've struggled to produce their best but there have been moments when they can break a game.

"A lot depends on how those two come back as to how much we miss those lads we couldn't get.

"I'm going to credit Steve Cooper and those behind the scenes who got these deals done. If they could have got that exciting winger it would have been a 10.

"Getting some players out, which has been a problem, should be credited."

GB : "I'd say eight too. In previous windows we've not known who signings are.. That's not the case now. They've also got a couple of strikers in.

"We've called for strikers before and it's not materialised. Goals get you promoted."

Some fans don't seem excited with the Surridge deal. What's your take?

GB : "I always see positives when teams sign a striker. A striker is dependent on service.

"At the City Ground he'll get service from both flanks and midfield. He'll get a chance to play in a creative team.

"The final third is so important for a striker. He needs good crosses and he needs to show good movement, but this is a great place to come to right now.

"I'm looking forward to seeing how he accepts the challenge but he should relish it."

MT : "A few too many Forest fans have been too quick to judge based on his goals ratio. Let's get behind the lad.

"We thought Grabban would be our franchise striker. We had to change plans quickly because Grabban took a whack in a game.

"For me, getting a player the manager is familiar with and one who wants to play for the gaffer is a positive.

"We can't be in a black and white viewpoint over a player who has not kicked a ball for the club!"

Are there enough goals in the team to go up?

GB: "You'd like to think so. You can't be beholden on strikers. When I played you had defenders who could get double figures and the same from midfielders. "
