Nottingham Forest sent clear answer to Steve Cooper dilemma

Nottingham Forest are in the enviable position of having two top goalkeepers on their books in Keylor Navas and Dean Henderson.

The former is a three-time Champions League winner with bags of pedigree and, at 36 years of age, experience. The latter is an impressive shot stopper who has made a big impression in the Premier League during his young career and could lay claim to the Manchester United gloves in the future.

Navas was drafted in on deadline day as injury cover for Henderson, who is understood to have suffered a grade two tear in his thigh during the 2-0 win over Leicester City last month. He has been out of action ever since, but the newcomer is as good a short-term replacement as one could hope for.

NOTEBOOK: Cooper's 'special' hope, painful injury stat, goalkeeper stance

Many teams would kill for just one of those options. The presence of both means that Steve Cooper could have a dilemma on his hands very soon, although it is a champagne problem if ever there was one.

When both men are available for selection, who does he pick: Navas or Henderson? We asked NottinghamshireLive readers who they thought deserved to be number one and they gave us a resounding answer.

In our latest poll, which asked 'who is the Forest number one when both goalies are fully fit?', 70 percent of respondents said Navas, with the rest plumping for Henderson. You can still have your say in the widget below:

It is a huge vote of confidence in the Costa Rica international, who has only played twice for Forest since joining from PSG. He showed his class on debut against Leeds United, making four saves to keep a clean sheet and secure a vital win.

Henderson has done little wrong to warrant losing his place in the starting lineup. He had the double misfortune of getting injured during the transfer window and the club so happened to sign one of the best goalies of the last decade.

With both men on short-term deals, Cooper's decision might come down to whom he thinks is more likely to have a long-term future at the City Ground. But it's more likely that he will base his selection on what is best for the team right now.

According to the fans, that's Navas.
