Nottingham city centre gym closes for good after 20 years

A charity which provides beds for homeless adults has confirmed the closure of a popular gym in Nottingham city centre. YMCA, which delivers a range of housing services, was also running the gym on Shakespeare Street.

But in a public notice announcing the closure, YMCA said it was "incredibly sad" that "it is no longer possible" for the gym to remain open. The gym was shut at 6pm on December 2 last year.

The gym operated at the location for 20 years. YMCA has also confirmed that the decision has not impacted any residents living in the YMCA Shakespeare Street accommodation.

A YMCA spokesperson told Nottinghamshire Live: "After proudly being part of the local community for
20 years, we made the difficult decision to close the YMCA gym in Nottingham on December 2 last year. As a not-for-profit charity, we must constantly assess the financial viability of every site, ensuring our organisation is providing the very best possible support and services for young people and the most vulnerable members of society. In this regard, it was no longer possible for the gym to remain open.

"This shift in our delivery will result in the growth of other key services, including Y’s Girls mentoring for girls and young women whose mental health is at risk, residential care for vulnerable young people, and the classes and facilities of the YMCA Village at Newark. The YMCA’s role in the community is growing, and we understand the need to expand these and other impactful services.

"We wrote to our members, who were reimbursed and understand that the YMCA gym has long been a beloved part of our offering to local people, and in taking this difficult decision, we share the sadness many will feel about its closure. We will always be grateful to each member for their support.

"Staff were given the option to relocate to work in other areas, including our Newark Community and Activity Village, we remain incredibly grateful for their hard work and loyalty. This decision has not impacted any residents living in the YMCA Shakespeare Street accommodation."
