Nottingham bar celebrates being named one of best in UK

A Nottingham bar that doesn't 'shout about itself' has been catapulted into the spotlight after being named one of the best in the UK. Cottonmouth, in Hockley, has made it into a list of the Top 50 Cocktail Bars.

The bar opened five years ago in Goose Gate, serving classic and unusual cocktails in chilled surroundings. The best-selling Ski Sunday is clarified yoghurt punch, with vanilla vodka, and peach wine. Vegan drinks include Musket, a twist on an Irish coffee, made from Irish whiskey, cold brew coffee concentrate, kirsche, Swiss chocolate liqueur, topped with a salted maple oat cream.

The rankings, one to 50, will be revealed at a ceremony in London on February 7. Bar owner Adrian Whitehouse doesn't know who put Cottonmouth forward for recognition.

He said: "Being included in the Top 50 Cocktail Bars list was a big surprise for us and we're very excited. It’s always great to be recognised by your peers and fellow professionals, especially on a national scale.

"A lot of people have told us this accolade is well deserved, but our ethos is to always remain grounded. We don’t shout about ourselves much, we're happy to let the people who come and visit our bar do that for us.

"We’ve got a lot of essential experience behind us, which we feel is vital in making a great venue. We know that great drinks are important, of course, but what we believe matters most is allowing our guests to feel welcome, comfortable and at ease so they can fully enjoy the whole experience. This is the core of hospitality and it has been our main focus since we opened our doors five years ago.

"Our city has a fantastic hospitality scene. We don't know if we are the first Nottingham-based bar to be listed in the top 50 - some people have said that we are, but we don’t know the history of the award - but we're sure we won't be the last."

There are also four specialist categories, which each have a winner: newcomer of the year, bar team of the year, the one to watch and sustainable bar of the year.
