Michigan State football is in the thick of preseason camp, with the Spartans holding their first team scrimmage this past weekend.
Head coach Mel Tucker met with the media on Monday to field questions on his team and how the first few weeks of practice have gone. Check out some of the notable comments and takeaways from Tucker’s press conference on Monday:
Tucker on what he liked from first scrimmage:

Tucker says Ben VanSumeren "is really coming on" at LB. Also says TE Daniel Barker showed out during the scrimmage. Felt QB1 Thorne was steady.

Tucker says WR Keon Coleman "is beginning to realize his potential and show it on the field." Calls him a "willing blocker." Adds that Germie Bernard also a willing blocker with good hands/speed.

Tucker on RB: "There's a lot of competition there." Says Broussard also is doing well – "I'm glad we got him." Points to Collins, Joiner and Simmons also running hard. MSU will scrimmage again Friday, a big one to decide who gets rep during game week.

Tucker says this is a "huge week." MSU will scrimmage again on Friday. "That's gonna be a huge scrimmage for us because at some point we have to decide who we’re going to give the reps to."
