‘Not long’: Ex-Rangers defender doesn’t expect Clement to see out the season

Alan Hutton knows Rangers manager Philippe Clement is on thin ice if results don’t improve, and fast.

Rangers’ latest loss against Kilmarnock further highlighted the issues that many supporters have witnessed since the start of the new season. And why the Light Blues are already six points behind Celtic and Aberdeen at the Scottish Premiership summit.

Hutton doesn’t want a constant merry-go-round at his old club, but understands that if Rangers fail to gain positive results over the next two weeks then they’ll be serious pressure for the board to act despite giving Clement a contract extension until summer 2028 only a few months ago.

“Not very many, is the honest truth,” the former right-back admitted when asked how many games the Belgian will have to save his job on Premier Sports’ Scottish Football Social Club.

“I've been the one that has said they have given him the contract and they need to stop this rinse and repeat with players and managers - 'right you need to use this squad, then somebody else comes in' - it has to stop at some stage.

“But, I ultimately understand it's a results business. I do think the squad is good enough to get results, especially domestically, but it's getting the best out of them.

“If it doesn't pick up - performances as well - you are in a high stakes position. You won't last long."

Fellow pundit Michael Stewart provided his take on Rangers’ current predicament and claimed there’s a good possibility that the Ibrox club will be searching for a new head coach come November.

“You talk about not getting results and he has not got any more, all you need to do is look 10 days ahead,” he explained.

“There is a game at Pittodrie. Steaua at home, St Mirren at home and Aberdeen away. You just feel that these three games on the back of that performance and result at Rugby Park could be defining."
