Norwich City head coach David Wagner insists Angus Gunn deserves the chance to play for Scotland.
The goalkeeper has been handed his first call-up by Steve Clarke for the forthcoming Euro 2024 qualifiers against Cyprus and Spain.
Gunn, whose dad Byran earned six caps for Scotland, has switched his international allegiances after being capped at every age group level with England until under-21.
Gunn, Hearts goalkeeper Zander Clark and Motherwell’s Liam Kelly will all now fight it out for the number one jersey with Craig Gordon recovering from a double leg break.
Wagner, who himself switched international allegiances from Germany to the USA, said: “I have not spoken to Angus in detail but for sure to play international games for a country, maybe with a chance to play a big tournament as well, huge credit to him.
“I’ve seen in every training session that he deserves it and I think Scotland can be very happy to have him in their national team and I really wish him and Scotland all the best for what is in front of them.
“It was similar for me, I played youth for Germany without any chance to get a call up to the A team, then popped up the chance to play for America and for me then I wanted to use this chance to play international football.”
