Northern Quarter bar raises thousands during gaming event for Ukraine

Manchester arcade bar NQ64 has been doing its bit to raise more than £6000 in a charity fundraiser called ‘Game for Ukraine’. It joined with the six other NQ64 sites across the UK - Edinburgh, Liverpool, Birmingham, Glasgow and Cardiff - to contribute to the Disasters Emergency Committee, which is providing relief efforts in war-torn Ukraine.

In all, the venues raised £6397 in just one day’s gaming for the DEC, which is providing emergency aid for those experiencing humanitarian disasters, with its efforts currently focussing on Ukraine. Gamers got stuck into retro arcades like Pac-Man, Time Crisis, Guitar Hero and Point Blank. According to the DEC, as many as 18 million people have already been affected by the conflict. It aims to provide those in need with emergency food and hygiene supplies, working with local partners to get them to the areas of most need.

For more information, you can check out the DEC website. It’s among a host of charity drives being undertaken by hospitality businesses around Manchester. Grub organised the Grub4Ukraine event earlier this month, with the likes of Korean Grub Club and breweries like Blackjack and Runaway joining in.

Others who have been pledging funds from each plate have been the likes of Sugo Pasta Kitchen, The Spärrows and Milk and Honey. UK-wide, meanwhile, the industry has been using the hashtag #cookforukraine to raise money. The official Cook For Ukraine Just Giving page has already received nearly £350,000 in donations since it was set up in March. It also features a list of traditional Ukrainian recipes for restaurants to put on their menus, from borscht to rassolnik, a beef and pearl barley stew.
