An ED consultant has pleaded with families to help get patients out of hospital beds and back home warning “we are on our knees in A&E”.
Dr Paul Baylis was speaking at Altnagelvin Hospital in Derry as he said staff are facing “sustained pressure”. He added that they need beds freed up to allow medics to get patients “out of the back of an ambulance” and into the ED.
In a video posted on the Western Health Trust Twitter account the medic said that on one day last week he had 52 patients waiting for admission to ED, but 50 patients in beds in the hospital who were “unable to be discharged for various reasons”.
