Northern and TransPennine rail strikes information and train travel into Liverpool for Eurovision 2023

Rail strikes are set to take place across the country today as members of the Rail, Maritime and Transport union (RMT) will walk out in a dispute over pay.

The industrial action is set to cause significant delays as services are cancelled or reduced over the weekend. Liverpool is hosting its biggest party ever as the city welcomes thousands for the Eurovision Song Contest 2023.

People thinking of heading into Liverpool to enjoy the festivities should plan ahead, particularly those travelling via Northern and TransPennine Express trains. Merseyrail is unaffected by the strikes on Saturday, May 13.

TransPennine Express trains

In a statement TransPennine said: "During Eurovision week, TransPennine Express services to and from Liverpool Lime Street will be busier than normal and customers are advised to check before they travel.

"As a result of the strike action, services on Sunday May 14 are expected to be extremely busy and customers are advised to allow plenty of time to travel."

Northern trains

In a statement on its website, Northern said: "There will be very limited Northern services on Saturday 13 May. Some Northern stations will have no service, trains that run will be busy and finish earlier – plan ahead.

"We advise checking journey planners if you choose to travel on days affected by industrial action, particularly in the morning and the last service of the day. Please also check journeys the day after strikes as some services may be affected. Remember to check your entire journey as services across the country may be affected."

Merseyrail trains

Merseyrail is not impacted by the industrial action, meaning it is expected to run a normal service during the international music competition, including for Saturday's final.

They added: "We understand strike action can be frustrating and confusing for our passengers. Often, Merseyrail are not involved in any strikes, however other operating companies which strike can impact the services which we provide."
