A number of schools in the North East have had to close on Friday due to severe weather conditions.
Parts of the North East had heavy snowfall overnight, with weather warnings in place from the Met Office. People were told to expect disruption on the roads and public transport.
The bad weather also led to a string of school closures in County Durham. We have listed these below. It is also worth checking the Durham County Council website here. And Northumberland has school closures too.

- Aclet Close Nursery School
The school will close on Friday, 10 March 2023 (All day ) and re-open on Monday, 13 March 2023 (Morning ). Reason for closure: Adverse weather/road conditions
- Bowes Hutchinson's CofE (Aided) School
The school will close on Friday, 10 March 2023 (All day) and re-open on Monday, 13 March 2023. Reason for closure: Due to the continued adverse weather we will be closed all day on the 10th March for health and safety reasons.
- Broom Cottages Primary School
The school will close on Friday, 10 March 2023 (All day ) and re-open on Monday, 13 March 2023 (Morning ). Reason for closure: Broom Cottages Nursery School is closed. The Primary school is open.
- Butterknowle Primary School
The school will close on Friday, 10 March 2023 (All day) and re-open on Monday, 13 March 2023. Reason for closure: Heavy snow.
- Consett Junior School
The school will close on Friday, 10 March 2023 (All day ) and re-open on Monday, 13 March 2023 (Morning ). Reason for closure: Class 1,2,3 and 6 are closed due to staffing issues caused by the weather. All other classes are fully open.
- Cotherstone Primary School
The school will close on Friday, 10 March 2023 (All day) and re-open on Monday, 13 March 2023. Reason for closure: Due to the continued adverse weather we will be closed all day on the 10th March for health and safety reasons.
- Crook Primary and Nursery School
The school will close on Friday, 10 March 2023 (All day) and re-open on Monday, 13 March 2023. Reason for closure: Weather conditions- unsafe to travel.
- Durham St Margaret's CofE Primary School
The school will close on Friday, 10 March 2023 (All day ) and re-open on Monday, 13 March 2023 (Morning ). Reason for closure: School is closed due to snow and the conditions within school grounds. The road onto Archery Rise is not safe to drive onto.
- Elemore Hall School
The school will close on Friday, 10 March 2023 (All day) and re-open on Monday, 13 March 2023. Reason for closure: All three school sites are inaccessible due to thick lying snow.
- Esh Winning Primary School
The school will close on Friday, 10 March 2023 (All day) and re-open on Monday, 13 March 2023. Reason for closure: Health and safety concerns due to the weather.
