No threat from Covid-19 to India Open, players from high-risk countries advised to undergo testing prior to departure

NEW DELHI: There’s no apparent threat to Yonex Sunrise India Open from Covid-19. Elaborate arrangements have been put in place by the organisers to deal with any contingency, Badminton Association of India (BAI) said on Tuesday. The $900,000 prize-money event, which has now been upgraded to a Super 750 series, will be played at the K D Jadhav indoor hall of the IG stadium here from January 17-22.

After a hiatus of two years when the editions were cancelled in 2020 and 2021 due to Covid-19, India Open returned in 2022 amid tighter restrictions and behind closed doors, only to see several participating stars falling ill during the annual event. It led to last-minute pull-outs and players being accorded byes into next rounds.
