'No star man' - John Barnes issues surprising Bruno Guimaraes verdict despite superb Newcastle form

John Barnes does not believe Bruno Guimaraes is a "star man" despite having an impressive impact on the Newcastle squad. The Brazilian scored both goals as the Magpies won against Leicester and set up Miguel Almiron for the winner against Crystal Palace.

The midfielder has added a real quality to the Eddie Howe's starting XI in the short time he's been at the club. There's a growing sense among supporters and the coaching staff that he could be a real star of the future.

However, former Toon midfielder Barnes, who was speaking to BonusCodeBets, claims Allan Saint-Maximin is actually the closest thing to being a star man. The French winger has struggled in recent weeks, but no doubt played a huge part in keeping the Magpies up the last two seasons.

Barnes said: “Newcastle don’t have a real star man in Bruno Guimarães, their player closest to resembling one is Allan Saint-Maximin. Newcastle would be wrong to look for just one star man that takes them to where they want to be, what if they broke their leg and couldn’t play for a year?

“Bruno Guimarães is a great player that’s a part of the team. He is part of a squad that can take them to where they want to go – but if anyone is thinking he is their star man, then that’s not the case at all.”
