'No photo is worth your life' - Seaham Coastguard issues warning over taking pictures of stormy waves

A coastguard in County Durham has issued a warning about taking photos of the stormy weather on the coastline urging "no photo is worth your life".

Seaham Coastguard shared guidance from the Maritime and Coastguard Agency which said it only takes 15cm of water to take your legs out and sweep you off your feet.

It comes as the Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for strong winds across the North East throughout Wednesday and Thursday.

Wind speeds are expected to reach up to 50mph with forecasters warning there could be delays for high-sided vehicles on exposed routes and bridges and delays to some road, rail, air, and ferry transport.

And now Seaham Coastguard is making sure people are aware of the "hidden" dangers as the sea can hurl some potentially lethal weapons including large rocks and stones, sharp objects and sewage.

People have been urged to stay home and indoors if they can and avoid the coast for now.

The post reads: "Coastal areas are very windy today so stay home and indoors if you can and avoid the coast for now – it will still be there when the weather improves.

"If you do have to be out on the coast remember: No photo is worth your life, it only takes 15cm of water to take your legs out and sweep you off your feet

"Stay back, stay safe, and don’t take any unnecessary risks in or on the water which may endanger yourselves, your family, and put rescuers at risk if they are called out.

"Should you see anyone in trouble on or near the coast, don’t hesitate to call 999 and ask for the Coastguard."
