Nicola Sturgeon to deliver covid update for Scotland today - what time and how to watch

Nicola Sturgeon is to give an update on the pandemic this afternoon.

The First Minister will deliver a statement to MSPs at the Scottish Parliament – her first in weeks amid a huge spike in covid cases in recent days.

The number of confirmed cases of coronavirus has seen a sharp rise in recent days, with Glasgow's seven-day rate of infection also soaring.

There were 1,805 people in hospital on Sunday with recently confirmed covid and 27 people in intensive care – though Public Health Scotland (PHS) has been experiencing technical issues and is unable to provide full data.

What can we expect to hear?

The First Minister is expected to discuss the growth in covid cases and hospital admissions in what is to be her first address since early February.

In the first week of March, an estimated one in every 18 Scots had Covid-19, data from the Office for National Statistics showed.

Scotland's Chief Medical Officer said ministers will be advised to take a "cautious approach" to lifting the remaining coronavirus restrictions in Scotland. Rules, such as the requirement to wear face masks, are due to end on March 21.

Posting on Twitter last week, he explained that covid rates were "increasing across all age groups" due to rising numbers of the Omicron BA-2 sub-type, which is now dominant.

However, he said there are some "hopeful signs" the hospital admission rate is beginning to "top out" towards the latter end of last week.

What time will the briefing be held?

The update will take place some time after 2pm, and is expected to begin at around 2.30pm.

Where can I watch the update?

The briefing will be streaming live on the Glasgow Live Facebook page. It will also be broadcast live on the Scottish Government Twitter page as well the BBC One Scotland channel and BBC Scotland iPlayer.
