Nick Nairn and wife dish out hot food for homeless Scots for charity

Nick Nairn dished out bowlfuls of kindness to people in need after he and his wife stopped in Glasgow to help a homeless charity.

The celebrity chef and his wife Julia dropped by Homeless Project Scotland under the Hielanman's Umbrella in Argyle Street to lend two extra pairs of hands to their hot food efforts. Pictures shared by the charity on social media showed the pair serving up hot food to those in need.

Nick tweeted: "After a sweltering day in the polly tunnel @joolsnairn and I drove through to Glasgow to help out under the heilnman umbrella where a brilliant, insightful and humbling organisation, Homeless Project Scotland, are feeding people who find themselves in difficult circumstances. We need to do everything we can to help these guys and then ask the big question about why soup kitchens and food banks are so necessary in 2022."

While he didn't provide any cooking himself this time, he said: "I tell you what, when I come back, I am going to make something and bring it with me." He added: "I think this is amazing, it's fantastic. People just need to see this. You shouldn't have to do this but the reason you're having to do this means there is a problem."

Fellow cooks and others took to Twitter to praise the chef and his wife for lending a hand. John Higgins - a former cook for the Queen - said: "Top man Nick everyone needs a wee boost in life. A smile and a bowl of food goes a long way. Kindness if free the rewards are humbling."

Another Twitter user said: "This is an absolutely brilliant project. It's also sad to see so many people finding themselves there for sometimes their only proper meal of the day. Good on you for helping out."

Celebrity chef Nick lent his efforts to supporting Homeless Project Scotland after the charity hit out at First Minister Nicola Sturgeon on Twitter for not coming to see their work. It had tweeted earlier this week that the FM's deputy private secretary had said her diary was "too busy", adding: "Why can you not come see the suffering in Glasgow?"

Nick then got in touch via Twitter, writing to the charity: "Hey guys, give me a shout and I’m sure we can do something." Homeless Project Scotland bosses Colin McInnes and Fraser Riddell travelled to Downing Street earlier this year to receive the Points of Light award from departing Prime Minister Boris Johnson in recognition of their work.

Homeless Project Scotland is fundraising for gas bottles to continue its mission of feeding those in need. The fundraiser can be viewed here.
