Nick Kyrgios' injury hit 2023 has experienced another blow, after being ruled out of the French Open due to the injuries sustained in an incident involving his family
According to The Canberra Times, the 28-year-old was involved in the alleged incident which saw Kyrgios' Tesla car stolen and his mother threatened with a gun. The incident took place on May 1 at the star's Canberra home, with Kyrgios suffering an injury to his foot amid the chaos which saw the tennis star attempting to track down the alleged thief.
Speaking after the incident, Kyrgios revealed that he only realised that he had suffered an injury in the aftermath. The 2022 Wimbledon finalist's injuries are thought to be so severe that he will miss the French Open, which gets underway on Monday May 22.
Kyrgios' manager has spoken about the extent of his injuries, explaining: "We don't know when it happened, but it's quite a large laceration," revealed Daniel Horsfall. "The location of the wound, it's been open for almost a week and a half now. It's not healing correctly and he can't put in the work on court, so he's been off court for almost two weeks now."
Kyrgios has been out of action for the entirety of 2023 following knee surgery and had been back training on court ahead of an expected Wimbledon comeback. A lack of action has seen the outspoken Aussie slip to 29th in the world rankings, and he is set to drop even further if he misses the upcoming French Open.
It has been revealed that preparations had been going well, and the latest setback is not expected to impact on his attempt for a return to action at the start of the grass court season. Kyrgios has thrived on grass throughout his career, with some of his most memorable moments coming at the All England Club at Wimbledon.
"The knee surgery went as well as it possibly could and his rehabilitation was fantastic and we were at the point where we were doing on-court loading and management," Horsfall added. "We needed to be at a point that he could comfortably play five sets.
"We'll start the process once the wound starts to heal and scab. We're definitely still trying to make the first tournament of the grass season."
"He just misses the competition … this is the longest he's been out of tennis because of injury. We would've been ready to go, but we had to readjust the schedule."
Kyrgios lost the 2022 Men's Final at Wimbledon in four sets to Novak Djokovic, with defeat coming in the searing heat following a number of outbursts during the match. With a field looking wide open after Djokovic lost his world No.1 ranking, it may still be a good year for the star as he looks to finally win a grand slam title.
