Nick Foles has opened up on the possibility of retiring from the NFL after being released by the Indianapolis Colts.
Foles played just three games for the Colts in the 2022 season, and only 10 across the two previous seasons with the Chicago Bears. The 34-year-old is now a free agent after being released by the Colts earlier this year.
He previously helped the Philadelphia Eagles with Super Bowl LII in 2018, after stepping in for the injured Carson Wentz. He has since had spells with the Jacksonville Jaguars, as well as with the Bears and the Colts.
Now a free agent, Foles has opened up on the decision by the franchise to release him. He insists there are no hard feelings, and that “everything is fine” as he now considers his future.
“I was just released yesterday by the Colts, which is actually a good thing, so don’t cry for me. It’s OK,” Foles told the Philadelphia Inquirer.
“The coach that I was there for, [former Eagles offensive coordinator] Frank Reich, was fired. Their GM and I had a good relationship. It’s all good. Everything’s fine.”
At the age of 34 and without a franchise, the topic of retirement has come up yet again for Foles. It’s a situation he’s been in before, and admits that he’s been “tested” by what’s happened in his career.
“Shoot, almost every year of my career I’ve almost retired,” said Foles. “Every offseason, I think, ‘Do I still want to play? Do I still want to keep going?’
“Specifically this last year with everything, God’s really been testing my identity in the game because I was able to get rid of it many years ago, and it was just all about Christ.
“But [with the] Super Bowl and different experiences, it starts creeping back in. That’s sort of what you’re recognised for. But then people get to know me, and they’re like, ‘He’s just a goofball. He’s just like any one of us.’
“I mean, maybe I played in the NFL, but definitely, I’m just a man. I’m just a human. I have the same faults.”
