NGO performs last rites, kin on brink after breadwinner’s death

HYDERABAD: After a 23-year-old patient from Kolkata died at Osmania General Hospital on Saturday morning, volunteers found his inconsolable family seeking money for the last rites. Even as an NGO swung into action and conducted the funeral, the mother-daughter duo was found to be suicidal after losing the family’s sole breadwinner, Ravi Narayan Khilar.

Tragedy stuck just weeks after Ravi secured a job in the government MRO office in Kolkata and was rushed to Hyderabad with severe vomiting and stomach ache. “He was diagnosed with pancreatitis. The family was advised by someone in Kolkata to took Ravi to Hyderabad, where they could receive free treatment,” said one of the volunteers, who spotted the family.
