Tony Romo is no longer the broadcast ace upon which CBS could rely. The former Pro Bowl quarterback once delighted viewers as a color commentators who was able to see plays unfold based on formations, earning the nickname “Romostadamus” in the process.
Lately, however, he’s devolved from a crucially prepared announcer to “loud guy at the bar” levels of insight. Sunday night’s Buffalo Bills vs. Philadelphia Eagles featured his typical combination of useful defensive pre-snap reads (incoming blitzes, safety coverages, etc) and shrugging declarations to Jim Nantz that he, despite decades of experience in the game, just doesn’t know what’s going on.
Week 12’s nailbiter gave way to new heights of insipid Romo commentary. He frequently opined about the Eagles lack of run game creativity on a day where Lane Johnson was out due to injury and Jalen Hurts clearly was unable to scramble to his full abilities. He then second guessed those calls when the Eagles tried them and struggled.
But this was nothing compared to the moment he suggested the Eagles should run a fake field goal with 20 seconds to play in a 31-28 game. On fourth-and-17. With no timeouts left and the ball at the Buffalo 41-yard line. By inserting Stefon Diggs into the game.
Diggs, it needs to be said, does not play for the Philadelphia Eagles.
Needless to say, fans and the frustrated masses alike took to Twitter to express their displeasure with Romo’s latest low-effort broadcast.
Hearing Romo suggest the Eagles sneak Stefon Diggs on the field for a fake and then watching a 60-yarder get drilled in weather gave me whiplash

Tony Romo talking about your team after you just lost is like when the Blue Shell in Mario Kart hits you after the race is over.

Tony Romo: (loudly advocates for the Eagles to run Jalen Hurts even though he's clearly hurting)
Eagles: (run Hurts, gain two yards on second and 15)

Clearly not a catch no matter how many weird gross guttural sounds Tony Romo wants to make.

I would pay a lot of money to never have to listen to Tony Romo call an Eagles game again

Tony Romo advocating for the Eagles to use Jalen Hurts legs when Hurts very clearly cannot run with the same effectiveness is so funny

A choice route? 20 yards down field? The downfall of Tony Romo will never be forgotten

Romo is so disappointed. I usually don’t do this, but WTF??? He should put on a Bills cheerleading outfit
