NFC West Watch: 49ers extend WR Brandon Aiyuk

A conflusion to the saga between the San Francisco 49ers and one of their top offensive weapons has finally come to a conclusion.

After an offseason rife with contract negotiation drama, the San Francisco 49ers have extended wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk. The 49ers have given their former first round pick a four-year deal worth $120 million. In mid-July, Aiyuk officially requested a trade from San Francisco. Now, he’s staying put in the Bay Area as a very rich man.

The 49ers had expressed interest in re-signing Aiyuk, who was entering into the last year of his contract, but  the two sides appeared as if they were not going to come to terms. San Francisco’s roster is still one of the best in football, but losing Aiyuk would have been a hit. Had they lost him, they would have had to find a way to replicate his 1,342 receiving yards and seven touchdowns he logged last year.

Unfortunately for fans of the Seattle Seahawks (and other NFC West teams), San Francisco is going to remain just as strong offensively – at least on paper – as they were last season. Now, there is brewing drama with left tackle Trent Williams, who is unhappy with his contract situation and is holding out. If the 49ers are without Williams for quite some time, it will be a considerable detriment to their offense. However, at this time it is hard to imagine him not playing for the 49ers this year.

The Seahawks have lost their last five meetings to San Francisco, and none of them have been particularly close. They will still have to deal with the likes of Aiyuk, even if it is with Mike Macdonald’s defense. Last year, Macdonald’s Ravens shut down the San Francisco offense, but Aiyuk still had six receptions for 113 yards.
