Next teacher strike dates in Scotland as 16-day walkout over pay dispute continues

Teacher strikes are set to continue in Scotland with 16 days of walkouts planned across the country.

Leading teachers union, the Educational Institute of Scotland (EIS), is expected to go ahead with the strike action starting next Monday.

Union members will carry out strikes at two local authorities on each day of industrial action, rather than having all teachers walk out at once.

The teachers' union has been in talks with Scottish Government representatives in recent days, but the latest pay rise offered has been rejected.

EIS General Secretary Andrea Bradley said: "Despite their warm words over the past week, the Scottish Government and COSLA have again failed to come to the table with a new pay offer to Scotland’s teachers."

The EIS union is hoping for a 10 percent pay rise across the board. The latest offer of a five percent rise for most teachers and 6.85 percent for the lowest earners has been called "reheated sub-inflationary offer" by Ms Bradley.

Education secretary Shirley-Anne Somerville told MSPs earlier this week she will leave "no stone unturned" to resolve this dispute.

However, she has added that "some distance remains between us" in regards to herself as Education secretary and the unions.

Other teachers unions NASUWT, Scottish Secondary Teachers' Association (SSTA) and the Association of Headteachers and Deputes (AHDS) have also rejected the most recent pay offer. They may also announce strike dates in the coming days.
