California Gov. Gavin Newsom has vetoed a bill that would have written into state law his promise not to extradite abortion providers to states that ban the procedure, drawing a rare public rebuke from abortion rights groups that are usually among his closest allies. The measure, Assembly Bill 2164 by Assemblymember Rebecca Bauer-Kahan, D-Orinda, passed the Legislature on August 25, and Newsom released his veto message on Sunday, September 20.
The bill would have essentially cemented a 2022 executive order declaring that California would not extradite people who provide or help provide abortion care to patients in states with stricter laws, often through prescriptions for medication abortion, the San Francisco Chronicle reported. It also would have extended the same extradition protection to gender-affirming care.
