MEERUT: Nearly three years after a newly-married woman was found dead under mysterious circumstances, the court of the Additional Judicial Magistrate, Gyan Prakash Tiwari, sentenced the victim’s husband and her father-in-law to life imprisonment.
According to additional district general counsel (ADGC), Keshav Dev Sharma, in September 2020, the woman, 28, was found dead under suspicious circumstances at her in-laws' house in the Chhatari area of Bulandshahr.
“On the basis of a complaint filed by the victim's family, a case under sections 498A (husband or relative of husband of a woman subjecting her to cruelty) and 304b (dowry death) was filed against her husband and three family members from her in-laws,” said Sharma.
“Police filed a chargesheet in December 2021 and stated strangulation as the cause of the death. During the court’s trial, all the witnesses turned hostile. The court took suo motu cognisance in the case, and citing the Supreme Court’s judgement in a 2015 case (Purshottam Dashrath Barate and Others Vs State of Maharashtra), the court sentenced life imprisonment to the woman’s husband Omprakash and father-in-law Pappu under Section 302 (punishment for murder)," Sharma added.
