Newcastle United’s superb victory over Arsenal left TV anchor Piers Morgan rather unhappy at the Gunners’ performance. The Magpies ran out two-nil winners at St James’ Park and dealt a serious blow to Arsenal’s Champions League hopes.
Arsenal started the game in fifth but knew that a win against United and then Everton on the final day of the season would secure fourth place - regardless of what local rivals Tottenham did. However, Mikel Arteta’s men failed to match the efforts of United, and goals from Callum Wilson and Bruno Guimaraes secured all three points for Eddie Howe’s men.
Morgan, a controversial character on social media, wasted no time in airing his views on Arsenal - with Arteta coming in for the brunt of the criticism. “Show some bl**dy fight,” he tweeted before questioning why Arsenal had handed Arteta a new deal.
“Absolutely pathetic. Why the hell did we give Arteta a contract before the season even finished? This will be his 12th League loss of the season, after spending £250m in 2yrs.
“That would normally get an Arsenal manager the sack, not a bloody new deal.” Arteta only signed a new three-year deal early this month.
Wilson’s goal was his first for 140 days after picking up an injury in late December. The victory over Arsenal was the perfect way to round out United’s home campaign - which has seen them lose only two games at St James’ Park in 2022.
