Newcastle United offered the Juventus man once dubbed the 'next' Leonardo Bonucci

Turkey international Merih Demiral is no stranger to Newcastle United after the Magpies took a closer look at the centre-back last season during his loan spell with Atalanta.

Headlines in Italy are suggesting that the 24-year-old is a defensive option for Newcastle after failing to make a permanent switch to the Bergamo side so far this summer. A €20million clause agreed between his parent club Juventus and Atalanta means he had the option to stay on at the Gewiss Stadium after 28 matches.

But after Atalanta failed to qualify for Europe, there is a question mark on transfer funds for the Serie A side. The option of another possible loan with a view to a permanent is now being mooted for Demiral.

The centre-back has made just 32 appearances for Juventus during an injury-affected stint in Italy after moving to the club in 2019. The former Sporting Lisbon man is a known as a big character behind the scenes and the dominant defender would be a hit with fans as he is a no nonsense operator.

He said in an interview with Serie A's You Tube channel last term: "I like taking on responsibility. And I always want to improve. My strengths are grit and determination."

After arriving at Juventus following a good loan spell at Sassuolo, he was dubbed as the next Leonardo Bonucci by the Italian media. Back in 2019, he said: "Giorgio Chiellini and Bonucci have been helping me a lot to settle in here as well as the other players, I hope to learn a lot from them."

However, the Turkey star's dream move has not hit the heights and with Juve ready to sell him, a Premier League move could appeal to him. Were Newcastle to make him an offer it would certainly be a lot more appealing than the defender running down his contract until 2024.
