Newcastle United news with Barcelona star option and Joelinton's Brazil joy

Here are the latest Newcastle United headlines for Tuesday, May 30, 2023.

Barca could offload Torres

Newcastle United are among a clutch of Premier League clubs who will be offered the chance to sign Ferran Torres when the transfer window reopens next month.

Torres is out of favour at Barcelona and with the Catalan giants needing to shift players this summer in order to free up the wage bill -after a demand from La Liga chiefs to reduce their finances - the 23-year-old is on a list of candidates who can leave. Eddie Howe has not specified which positions he is looking but Torres would not be against having another crack at the Premier League.

After leaving Man City, Torres has made 50 appearances for Barca, scoring eight times in the Spanish top-flight. He is valued at €30m but Barca may let him leave for less, which could provide a decent option for the Magpies.

Joelinton call-up delight

Joelinton learned of his Brazil call up just moments before Newcastle ended their season at Stamford Bridge on Sunday. The Magpies midfielder will be in contention to feature for Brazil against Guinea and Senegal in June and has spoken about hearing the news.

“I wanted to go to the beach and my wife told me to wait. I thought: if I get the news, I’ll be there. If I don’t receive it, I’ll be sad, but at least I’ll enjoy the beach," Joelinton told Brazilian outlet Globe Esporte.

“When he said my name, I just cried. It’s a feeling of pride, of seeing that this effort is being seen. A film goes through your head, of everything I’ve ever lived.

"Every effort, dedication and every fight was worth it. Proud of everything I’ve been through, how I’ve grown and learned. Leaving Aliança, being able to arrive in Europe and now at the Brazilian national team, it’s a moment you dream of, but you don’t know it’ll come true.”

Gordons Champions League joy

Newcastle United star Anthony Gordon has revealed he expected to be playing Champions League football when he agreed to join the club back in January.

Gordon's name was still being chanted long after the final whistle on Sunday at Stamford Bridge after the 1-1 draw with Chelsea. And now he can dream of playing for the Magpies against a Real Madrid or Borussia Dortmund next season.

Speaking after the clash at Stamford Bridge - where he scored his first Toon goal - the Scouser told reporters: "These people haven't had Champions League football for so long and it couldn't happen to better people.

"I'm delighted for everyone. It is what you dream of. Champions League football is why I joined; because of these expectations."
