Newcastle United make 13 appointments at club's Academy in long-term youth recruitment drive

Newcastle United have now completed their Academy revamp after appointing 13 new staff members to aid the club's youth recruitment drive.

Throughout 2023, the Magpies have slowly changed the dynamics behind the scenes at Little Benton with the overhaul driven by sporting director Dan Ashworth. After some tough years for both the Under-18s and Under-21s, Ashworth is hoping that the club's long-term investment will pay off.

United named Paul Midgley as head of youth recruitment earlier this year after the North-East native came in from Manchester City. Academy supremo Midgley was joined by Paul McLaren who also has experience at City and Arsenal and came in as head of UK scouting.

Long-serving scout Paul Baker, the former Hartlepool and Blyth forward, tweaked his role at the Academy and is now Lead North Scout. Delroy Ebanks will look after scouting in the southern part of the country after taking on a role from West Ham while Dan Risk is also going to be representing Newcastle on the circuit.

United have also added two scouts for the North-West of the country with ex-Man United scout Andy Basterfield appointed while he will be joined by Dean Edwards, once of Stoke and Stockport.

In Yorkshire, Wayne Spooner joined after stints with Man City and Everton while the Midlands will be covered by Amos Mukiza, once of Leicester, and former Leeds man Ross Thorpe. United also have a big interest in the south east of England and have added ex-Crystal Palace scout Abdul Habib to their ranks.

The south west of the country is going to be looked after by Andy Gill who has worked for Man United and Leeds in that area. Newcastle's lead scout from the ages of U9-U14 is Eddie Black who arrived this year from Arsenal.

Black will be assisted by Michael Hutchinson who was promoted from within at Newcastle. Claire Burrows was appointed recently from Leicester City as head of operations.
