Newcastle United star Matt Targett is being looked at by Scotland for a potential World Cup play-off call-up. Scotland ran the rule over Targett in the 1-0 win over Crystal Palace on Wednesday night.
Targett was also looked at by England last month for their friendly games against Ivory Coast and Switzerland but after being overlooked Steve Clarke might be about to move in for his services. Targett qualifies for Scotland through his grandfather's roots.
The on-loan Aston Villa star did play for England Under-21s after call-ups to Scotland's youth set-up nine years ago. But Gareth Southgate has not made his move. Targett was delighted with the 1-0 win over Crystal Palace and is keen to make his switch to Newcastle permanent.
But he could yet find himself in the Scotland squad for the play-off games over Ukraine and then possibly Wales. Should Scotland win both they will be going to Qatar for the World Cup finals later this year.
